Albendazole is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic medication widely used in humans to treat infections caused by various worms . It works by inhibiting the parasites ability to absorb glucose, which leads to energy depletion and eventually the death of the parasite. Albendazole 400 mg  is commonly prescribed for intestinal worm infections such as roundworm , hookworm, pinworm, and whipworm. In addition to intestinal parasites, albendazole is also used to treat more serious tissue infections. These include neurocysticercosis, a condition caused by pork tapeworm larvae affecting the brain, and hydatid disease , which involves cyst formation in organs such as the liver and lungs. Because these conditions can be severe, albendazole is often given under medical supervision and sometimes alongside other medications like corticosteroids. Albendazole is usually taken orally, with fatty food to improve absorption. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the type of infection and the patients age and weight. While generally well tolerated, possible side effects include nausea, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, and temporary changes in liver enzymes. Pregnant women are usually advised not to use albendazole, especially during the first trimester.
